The mask can be either unifying or identifying, either ‘masked’ and lost in the mass, or wearing a mask of some identifying character. The mask of god is the illusion of phenomenal world. Masks in sacred plays portray the supernatural forces of the deities represented; in ordinary plays they symbolise the inner character ice which may normally be hidden by the outward personality.
